One of the joys of living in a community like Levenshulme is that you make friends with local business owners. Brenda Smith, owner of Bud Garden Centre, is one of our neighbours. Over the years we’ve got to know her better through popping in to Bud for plants and garden advice so it was lovely to help her celebrate the 5 year anniversary of her business.
Whilst geographically located in Burnage, Bud has a close association with Levenshulme. Brenda is, or has been, involved in many community activities, including Levy Market, Incredible Edible and Burnage and Levenshulme Open Gardens. You will also have seen her window boxes if you have eaten in The Buttery recently.
The garden centre’s proximity to Didsbury gives Bud an even wider following of garden enthusiasts. It’s not surprising then that yesterday, on a sunny Sunday afternoon, this little garden centre was buzzing.
We clearly weren’t the only ones who popped in for cake and left with a few more plants than intended. We came away with a Forget-me-not, mulch, some pea and sweet pea seeds and a bird feeder because we’re trying to make friends with the robin and blue tits that frequent the tree outside our front window.
By the time we arrived the cake had almost been demolished so I only managed a few photos. But what a cake it was. Just look at the drawing that preceded it.

I can assure you that it tasted amazing too.
Bud is a garden centre which prides itself on ethical gardening principles, so you can’t help but feel that you’re doing a little bit for the environment every time you make a purchase, and of course you’re supporting a local business at the same time.
Brenda is always on hand to answer questions and offer advice on the best plants for different spots in your garden, so whether you have a well established garden, just a few window boxes, or anything in between, I would highly recommend paying a visit to Bud.
Here’s to the next 5 years, and many more to come.
Happy Birthday Bud!
